People around have mistaken me for Philippians, Indonesian, Malay and latest to date is Australia Aboriginal (yes you ian!!) !! LOL
Well, rest assured, I'm not any of that.
And when I say that, they say, "But you don't look at all Chinese!'
"Ahhhhhhhh...... " I tell them..
"It seems like you've haven't heard of this race Baba Nyonya?"
What exactly is Baba Nyonya people might ask.
LOL.. just kidding.. well, my friend Siangee was more fond of Chinese language and for me, heck, I don't know how to read them! :(
Anyway,
Baba Nyonya (aka Peranakan) are terms used for the descendants of the very early Chinese immigrants in regions like Melaka, Penang and Indonesia, which adapt to Malay customs to 'click' into the society.
'Peranakan' means 'descendants'. Babas refer to the male descendants and the Nyonyas the female. The word nyonya may originate from the Portuguese word dona, which means 'lady'.
With Chinese immigrants married to local trade mans (which were most likely Muslims), this Chinese 'wifes' try to adapt to the Malay language. Due to their in-born Chinese accent, the had not much capability in speaking Malay fluently and sounded really different. Thus, that was how the Baba Nyonya language was born (TA-DAHH! XD ).
Even though married to Muslims, these Chinese 'wife's do not embrace Islam and thus, were free to do anything they please even if it might offend their husband's religion. Such things would be showing skin, eating pork, keeping dogs and so on.
And that so far explains the Baba Nyonya race on surface :)
So people out there,
When you see me..
REMEMBER...
